Field 'herping' is simply the act of going out in search of amphibians and reptiles in their natural environment. It's a natural extension to the hobby of keeping and breeding 'herps' in captivity, but very different in that typically the animals are not typically collected and taken home. Instead they are observed and appreciated for the magnificent creatures that they are and left as they are found. The thrill of searching for and finding your first Mountain King snake or Gila Monster is really quite extraordinary!
I've asked many herpetoculturists if they were also field herpers and a common response is "I'd love to go field herping, but I just don't know how, or where to go".
So how does one get into field herping?
